Facts about the Temple of Poseidon You Never Knew
The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple built on a small cliff at Sounion, Greece.
The temple was built in approximately 480 BC. It was one of the earliest and most critical Greek
temples in the Archaic period.
1) The Temple was initially rectangular, but it was later rebuilt in a Doric style with six columns across and thirteen along each short side.
2) Its construction started during Greek king Polykrates in about 480 BC, but it wasn’t completed until after his death in 444 BC under King Euripides.
3) In 1881, British archaeologist Arthur Evans uncovered what he thought to be the second oldest marble column on Earth while doing his excavation.
During his excavations, Evans was shocked to find a pillar made of pure white marble, which he believed to be the second oldest ever discovered. He named the site the ‘Pythagorean Monument,’ after Pythagoras, who first theorized that the Earth was a sphere around 4100 BCE.
